CLOSED

On the twentieth of May in 1979, Itabashi city, which has a population of more than five hundred thousand and is one of the twenty-three cities within Tokyo, founded the Itabashi Art Museum as the first city museum of all in Tokyo.
The area in which it was founded is rich in scenic and historic spots, such as the Itabashi Historical Museum, the Akatsuka Botanical Garden, Shogetsu-in Temple whose first reference dates back to the latter half of the Edo period (1600-1868) in “Edo Meisho Zu-e: Picture Topography of Edo (Old Tokyo)”, and the ruins of the Akatsuka Castle, as well as Joren-ji Temple known for its Big Buddha of Tokyo.
The museum collection is centered on the paintings and drawings of the Edo period and the avant-garde works from the Taisho period (1912-1926) to contemporary. In accordance with the museum collection, the museum holds several current shows on its own, as well as introduces special exhibitions like the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, Italy. It tries to be a popular museum in the area through its educational and informative programs for all generations of people including children.
